Introducing Hotel Types
Hotel is a general concept in English. It can be subdivided into different categories. Words like inn, resort, and motel refer to different types of hotels. Today, we are going to share with you different hotel types, explaining concepts and giving some examples.
Hotel operations vary in size, function, complexity and cost. Most hotels and major hospitality companies have set industry standards to classify hotel types.
General categories include the following: (Luxury Hotels,) Boutique and Lifestyle Hotels, Full Service Hotels, Economy and Limited Service, Extended Stay, Timeshare and Motel.
Boutique hotels are smaller independent non-branded hotels that often contain upscale facilities in unique or intimate settings with full service accommodations.
Lifestyle hotels are branded properties that appeal to a guest with specific lifestyle or personal image. A key characteristic of boutique and lifestyle hotels is their focus on providing a unique guest experience as opposed to simply providing lodging.
Examples include W Hotels, Shangri-La Hotels (and Resorts) and Banyan Tree.
W Hotels was founded in 1998. It’s generally marketed toward a younger crowd. It attempts to include the letter W wherever possible. The lobbies are known as the “Living Room”. The swimming pool is known as “Wet”. The concierge and Service Express is known as “Whatever Whenever”. The laundry bag is known as “Wash”.
Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts was founded in 1971. Inspired by the legendary land featured in the novel, Lost Horizon, the name Shangri-La encapsulates the serenity and service for which the hotel is renowned worldwide.
Full service hotels often provide a wide range of guest services and on-site facilities. Commonly found amenities may include: on-site food and beverage, meeting and conference services and facilities, fitness center, and business center.
